Your Surgery Recovery Checklist: What to Pack for a Smooth Experience

A practical packing checklist for plastic surgery recovery, covering wound care supplies, digestion aids, comfort essentials, and post-op care items to prepare before your procedure.

Planning for plastic surgery is an exciting time, but it can also be stressful, especially if you are traveling to your surgery destination. The key to a smooth and successful experience is preparation. By packing a curated list of essentials, you can help ensure your recovery is as comfortable and stress-free as possible. At Aria Cosmetic Surgery, we’ve put together a must-have checklist to help you get ready for your big day.

Remember, most of these items can be purchased in your destination city of surgery, but having them packed and ready can give you peace of mind.

Essential Items for Your Post-Op Comfort

1. Hygiene & Wound Care

  • Peroxide: This is handy for treating any blood or fluid stains that might get on your clothes or furniture, helping you keep your spaces clean. (Note: this should not be used on surgical incisions.)
  • Antibacterial Soap: This is a crucial item both before and after your procedure. Using it for your pre-op shower helps ensure your skin is clean. After surgery, it’s essential to keep your incisions clean and reduce the risk of infection.
  • Surgical Dressings or Chuck Pads: It’s normal to have some drainage from your incisions after surgery. These items are ideal for absorbing any fluid and maintaining a clean and dry surgical site. Surgical dressings like gauze and ABD pads are for minimal drainage. Chuck pads are essential for surgeries that include liposuction. The drainage will be heavy for the first few days, so additional supplies need to be considered. One great tip is a shower curtain, it can protect surfaces like car seats and furniture, and can be thrown away when no longer needed!

2. Digestion & Healing

  • Water: Proper hydration is an essential component of the healing process following surgery. Not only does adequate water intake minimize the risk of post-operative dehydration, which can occur from surgical fluid shifts, but it also helps prevent constipation. Furthermore, staying hydrated aids in flushing out toxins and supports the body’s entire recovery system.
  • A Gentle Laxative: Anesthesia and pain medication can often cause constipation. Having a gentle laxative on hand will help keep your digestive system on track and reduce any discomfort.
  • Pineapple juice contains the enzyme bromelain, which is recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties and its potential to minimize post-operative swelling. Though it is a helpful addition to a recovery diet, it should supplement, not replace, regular water intake.

3. Comfort & Mobility

  • Slippers: A good pair of comfortable slippers will make moving around much easier. They require no bending or straining to put on, which is a huge plus when you’re sore.
  • Loose-fitting clothing: After surgery, wearing dark, loose-fitting, button-down clothing is recommended. The dark color helps hide any drainage, and the button-down style allows you to get dressed with minimal movement.
  • Fluffy Robe: A soft, cozy robe is a recovery essential. It’s perfect for staying warm and covered with minimal effort, especially when getting in and out of clothing feels difficult. Ask us how to get your Aria Cosmetic custom robe!

4. Post-Op Care

  • Scar Cream: Once your surgeon gives you the green light (generally after 6 weeks), a gentle scar cream or tape can help minimize the appearance of your incision scars. Although incisions are placed in discreet locations, scar cream or tape can help you feel even more confident as you heal.
  • Sunscreen: Sunscreen is a crucial tool for optimal scar healing, particularly for any scars that will be exposed to the sun. For the first year post-operatively, protecting your scars from UV rays is paramount. Sun exposure can cause scars to develop hyperpigmentation, a darkening of the skin that can make them significantly more noticeable. Consistent sun protection allows scars to heal with a more uniform color and texture, making them more discreet over time.
